READING AND WATCHING OUR “D”s

New movie: DOUBLE INDEMNITY

This 1944 Billy Wilder classic was thoroughly enjoyable. The story was fun to watch and the dialogue was sharp and entertaining and full of double entendres. Plus the acting by Barbara Stanwyck, Fred McMurray and Edward G. Robinson was A+. Interestingly, Edward G. Robinson was hesitant to accept his role since he was reluctant to be in a supporting role but it turned out to be one of his best decisions. We both thought he was the true star of the movie because he had the best lines and delivery. The movie was honored with seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Actress.  If you like a “film noir,” this is one to add to your list of “must watch.”

New Author: Heidi Durrow

Barbara: I looked on my bookshelf to see if I had anything beginning with a D and luckily found an author whose name did. The book is The Girl Who Fell From the Sky. I had no idea where or from whom I got this one but was glad I did as I enjoyed it. (There’s a movie by the same name but has nothing to do with the book). The story unfolds when a woman and her children fall from their apartment building roof and one child survives. But the characters are what makes the book as well as the issues of growing up as a biracial girl, motherhood, grief and the effect of trauma on survival. If you like a book driven by issues and character rather than heavy plot, give this one a try.

And, since by now you know we are ice cream fanatics….

New ice cream flavor: DOLCE DE LECHE

We returned to one of our favorite ice cream shops – Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream and Yogurt – and tried their only “D” ice cream, Dolce de Leche. Wow. We were pleasantly surprised that it was scrumptious and although we usually gravitate to chocolate concoctions, we will definitely be having this one again.
